The world to which Christ’s spirit gravitated was of a higher order, He was in the world but not of the world. Though His feet carried Him amongst men in the darkness of this telestial world, His mind and spirit dwelt in an awareness of a more celestial sphere. Perhaps it is a profound place of solitude to journey where few can fully appreciate the path you travel.
Like Jesus in this painting our life’s journey sometimes leads on paths that are shadowed and strewn with rocky obstacles. It’s easy to stumble and as a result we find ourselves constantly looking down in order to negotiate the troublesome terrain. This however need not prevent our thoughts and awareness from being centered elsewhere. Like birds on the wing, our spirits can soar above it all and our hearts and minds ascend to higher realms. That Christ consciousness transcends and allows us to be in the world but not of the world.
